CoinShares (NASDAQ: CSHR) sells crypto treasury to fund buyback of up to $40 million

What happened

CoinShares PLC (NASDAQ: CSHR) said its board approved a program to buy back up to $40 million of its ordinary shares.

The money comes from the company's digital asset treasury. CoinShares says it is keeping enough cash to run the business and pursue its growth strategy.

Earlier this month, CoinShares sold its corporate treasury holding of Ethereum (16.6 million) and 50% of its Solana holding (2.7 million). It moved that capital toward share repurchases.

Shareholders gave the authority at the Sept. 15 Extraordinary General Meeting. It lasts until the next Annual General Meeting. Purchases will be made on the open market through independent brokers under the SEC's Rule 10b-18 safe harbor. They may run through Rule 10b5-1 trading plans.

Why it matters

The board frames the move as a trade-off. At current valuation levels, it believes buying CoinShares shares is a better use of capital than keeping the digital assets. It ties that view to AUM, which it says for the third quarter of 2026 is in line with the fourth quarter of 2025.

In effect, the company is moving treasury money from Ethereum and Solana into its own stock. CoinShares says the program reflects confidence in its earnings potential.

OptimistFi has argued that CoinShares creates durable value only if it turns volatile crypto recoveries into lasting AUM and fee income. That must happen faster than it uses up its small cash buffer or issues dilutive capital. The buyback tests the capital-allocation half of that view. AUM level with the end of 2025 leaves the growth half unproven.

The commitment is also soft. The program sets no minimum and can be suspended or discontinued at any time. Timing and amount depend on market conditions, so the cap is a ceiling, not a spending target.

What's next

The authorization lasts until the Annual General Meeting that CoinShares expects in Q2 2027. By then, how much of the cap the company has used will show whether the board followed through on its stated preference for buying shares. A suspension would weaken the case.
