What happened
Shares of Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) fell 7.1% from the December 31, 2025 close through October 23, 2026. The decline came despite much faster reported growth. The clearest tension is not weak demand. It is whether concentrated AI sales and software accounting can keep clearing a very high bar.
No public source can explain every trade. The operating record, however, shows why a strong quarter does not settle the case. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) is becoming more dependent on a small group of AI buyers while its product mix shifts toward lower-margin semiconductors.
The year started with fiscal-first-quarter revenue of $19.311 billion, up 29% from a year earlier. AI semiconductor revenue reached $8.4 billion, up 106%. Free cash flow was $8.010 billion, and Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) authorized a new $10 billion repurchase program.
Fiscal-second-quarter revenue rose 48% to $22.187 billion. AI semiconductor revenue reached $10.8 billion, up 143%, while free cash flow increased 60% to $10.262 billion. Those figures strengthened the business case without preventing the calendar-year share decline.

The move in numbers
The price calculation uses the same common stock and U.S. dollars at both endpoints. One hundred multiplied by $321.679993 divided by $346.100006 minus one equals negative 7.0558%. Alpaca's IEX daily bars produced negative 7.0721%, a difference of 0.016 percentage points.
Fiscal-third-quarter revenue then jumped 86% to $29.591 billion. AI semiconductor revenue was $16.7 billion, or 56.4% of total revenue. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) also generated $13.7 billion of free cash flow, equal to 46% of revenue.
The next-quarter guide raises the concentration test. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) expects $21.7 billion of AI semiconductor revenue inside $34.8 billion of total revenue. That would make AI semiconductors 62.4% of the guided total, up from 56.4% in fiscal Q3.
That mix can create extraordinary growth, but it makes each large deployment more important. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) said its five largest end customers represented about 55% of fiscal Q3 revenue. One semiconductor distributor alone represented 50% of direct sales.

How the business works
Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) combines two businesses. Semiconductor solutions include custom AI accelerators, Ethernet switching, networking, storage, broadband and wireless chips. Infrastructure software includes VMware Cloud Foundation, security and mainframe products sold through subscriptions and licenses.
The mix matters. Semiconductor solutions supplied 70% of fiscal Q3 revenue, up from 57% a year earlier. Infrastructure software supplied 30%. The filing says semiconductor products carry a lower gross margin than software, so faster hardware growth can pressure mix even when total profit rises.
NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) competes with a broad GPU and networking platform. Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRVL) competes in custom silicon, switching, storage and electro-optics. Large cloud customers also design chips internally, creating a customer-and-competitor risk that no quarterly growth rate removes.
VMware gives Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) a second earnings engine. Fiscal Q3 infrastructure software revenue rose 29% to $8.752 billion. The filing also says qualifying nonterminable software licenses can be recognized upfront, so contract timing can move reported revenue between quarters.
What could break the case
The bull case is straightforward. Custom accelerators and networking keep winning large deployments, VMware renewals hold, and both businesses convert revenue into cash. Fiscal Q3 gross margin was 69%, and nine-month operating cash flow reached $32.950 billion.
The strongest counterargument is that the same figures reveal dependence. A delayed AI deployment or lost design win can move a large share of revenue. The five largest end customers already represented about 55% of the quarter, versus about 40% one year earlier.
The balance sheet leaves less room for a prolonged mistake. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) held $23.975 billion of cash against $61.079 billion of debt at August 2. The resulting $37.104 billion difference is manageable only if cash generation remains durable.
Software has a separate test. Upfront license recognition can make current growth look stronger without proving recurring customer demand. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) must retain VMware customers while public-cloud platforms and enterprise software vendors keep expanding their alternatives.
What's next
The next direct test is fiscal Q4. Watch whether Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) reaches roughly $34.8 billion of revenue, $21.7 billion of AI semiconductor revenue and a 66% non-GAAP operating margin. Also watch customer concentration, software revenue quality, inventory and operating cash flow.
A clean result would show that AI demand is scaling faster than concentration and mix risks. A miss, weaker cash conversion or more dependence on one buyer would weaken the case. The 7.1% price decline is a measured fact, not proof that the stock is cheap or that any one risk caused it.
