What Sensient Technologies (SXT) Said on Its Q3 Earnings Call

Sensient Technologies (NYSE:SXT) reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $455.8 million, up from $412.1 million a year earlier, as demand for natural food colors and growth across its operating groups supported results. The company said local-currency revenue increased 10%, while local-currency adjusted EBITDA rose 15% and adjusted EPS increased 18%.

Operating income was $72.4 million for the quarter, compared with $57.7 million in the prior-year period. The year-earlier quarter included $3.3 million of Portfolio Optimization Plan costs. Excluding those costs, adjusted operating income increased 18.6% in local currency, according to Chief Financial Officer Tobin Tornehl.

Natural Color Conversion Drives Color Group Growth

Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Manning said the company’s Color Group produced 17% local-currency revenue growth and 21% local-currency operating-profit growth during the quarter. The segment’s adjusted EBITDA margin was 25.1%, an increase of 40 basis points from the prior year.

The Color Group recognized about $30 million of new natural color conversion revenue during the third quarter, adding to the $45 million cumulatively recognized through the first half of the year. Manning said Sensient is seeing growing demand as customers replace synthetic food colors with natural alternatives.

“The conversion is happening,” Manning said, pointing to a nearly 10% decline in total U.S. Food and Drug Administration synthetic color certifications over the past 12 months. He said 85% of all new U.S. product launches in the third quarter were naturally colored.

Sensient continues to target $1 billion in incremental natural color sales, with the company expecting to approach that annualized run rate as it exits 2028. During the question-and-answer session, Manning said approximately 20% of that conversion opportunity could be closed by the end of 2026, with additional activity expected in 2027 and most remaining conversions occurring in 2028.

Management noted that purchase orders tied to conversions may initially represent only a portion of a customer’s annualized volume, as customers sell existing synthetically colored inventory and gradually introduce reformulated products.

Other Businesses Post Revenue and Profit Gains

The Flavors & Extracts Group generated 3% local-currency revenue growth and 9% local-currency operating-profit growth. Its adjusted EBITDA margin rose 80 basis points to 18.5%. Manning said the agricultural ingredients business delivered favorable volume growth during the period, while the broader group remains focused on technical flavor wins and cost optimization.

The Asia Pacific Group reported 15% local-currency revenue growth and 32% local-currency operating-profit growth. Adjusted EBITDA margin reached 27.5%, up 330 basis points from the third quarter of 2025. Management attributed the performance to new color and flavor sales wins across the region.

  • Color Group: 17% local-currency revenue growth; 21% operating-profit growth.
  • Flavors & Extracts Group: 3% local-currency revenue growth; 9% operating-profit growth.
  • Asia Pacific Group: 15% local-currency revenue growth; 32% operating-profit growth.

Manning said Sensient expects Color Group revenue growth in the high teens for the full year, Flavors & Extracts growth in the mid-single digits, and Asia Pacific revenue growth in the low double digits.

Investment Program and Capital Allocation

Sensient expects to spend approximately $160 million on consolidated capital expenditures in 2026, including a portion of roughly $250 million in planned natural color capital spending, with most of that investment scheduled for 2026 and 2027. The company is also increasing working-capital investment to build its natural color supply chain.

Cash flow from operations totaled $40 million during the third quarter, while capital expenditures were $38 million. Net debt-to-credit-adjusted EBITDA stood at 2.3 times as of Sept. 30.

Tornehl said debt is expected to increase as the company funds capital expenditures and inventory investments, although management expects leverage to remain within its covenants. He said Sensient’s leverage ratio could increase during the following year but remain below its 3.5-times covenant threshold.

The company does not anticipate share repurchases in the near term. Management said it will consider acquisitions that offer strategic advantages in technology, supply chain or geography, while continuing to support its dividend.

Guidance Reaffirmed and GAAP EPS Range Raised

Sensient reiterated its 2026 outlook for local-currency revenue growth in the high-single-digit to low-double-digit range and local-currency adjusted EBITDA and EPS growth in the mid- to high-teens.

The company raised the lower end of its full-year GAAP EPS guidance to $4.15 from $4.10 and narrowed the range to $4.15 to $4.20. It expects full-year interest expense of about $34 million, a tax rate of approximately 25%, and corporate expense of roughly $66 million, reflecting higher performance-based compensation.

Management said foreign-currency effects on fourth-quarter EPS are expected to be immaterial at current exchange rates. Sensient also expects full-year EBITDA margins in the mid-20% range for the Color Group and Asia Pacific Group, while Flavors & Extracts margins are expected to remain in the high teens.

Addressing quarterly margin variability in the Color Group, Manning said the company expects to maintain approximately a 25% EBITDA margin, although the timing of depreciation from new equipment may create modest quarter-to-quarter movements. He said much of the anticipated selling, general and administrative investment has already been added, while more depreciation expense will be recognized as natural color capacity comes online.
