What happened
IREN Limited (NASDAQ: IREN) secured a civil works license for its planned Badajoz, Spain, AI campus on October 21. The permit advances construction, but the company did not announce additional capacity or a customer deal.
The project is designed for about 300 megawatts of power, with initial operations targeted for 2028. IREN Limited (NASDAQ: IREN) also formed a European operating company and named regional leaders. The company says the campus is intended to serve customers that need AI computing and data residency in Europe.

Why it matters
The useful comparison is with what investors already knew. When IREN Limited (NASDAQ: IREN) bought Spanish developer Nostrum in June, it disclosed roughly 490 megawatts of secured, grid-connected power in Spain. Its fiscal 2026 filing already identified the roughly 300-megawatt Badajoz site. Today's announcement therefore changes the project's permitting status, not its reported size.
Badajoz accounts for about 61% of that previously reported Spanish power portfolio: 300 divided by 490. That concentration makes this single site important to the European expansion, but grid-connected development power is not the same as an operating AI cloud. The release did not provide a Badajoz construction budget, financing terms, signed customer capacity or expected revenue.
A permit is still meaningful. It removes one local approval hurdle and lets investors watch for actual construction rather than relying only on a site pipeline. The strongest opposing point is timing: management targets initial operation in 2028, and other approvals, financing, equipment, buildout and customers can still determine the economics.

What's next
The next useful evidence is a funded construction schedule, followed by commissioned power and a named customer commitment for Badajoz. Those milestones would show whether IREN Limited (NASDAQ: IREN) can turn this permitted site into capacity that earns AI cloud revenue.
For now, the license modestly strengthens the execution case. It does not establish that the planned 300 megawatts will be delivered by 2028 or that the site will earn an attractive return.
