Why it matters

The OptimistFi case is that HOMB can keep generating high earnings on a largely stable balance sheet without expensive acquisitions. This quarter supports that only partly. Loans receivable fell to $16.91 billion from $17.13 billion at June 30, 2026. On a sequential basis, total revenue (net) fell 2.3%, from $295.1 million to $288.4 million.

Non-interest expense fell to $121.5 million from $135.5 million. The company said the drop was mainly due to the absence of acquisition-related expenses from the second quarter. It also reported $2.9 million of purchase accounting accretion and $1.5 million of event interest income. Total deposits were $18.76 billion, down from $19.11 billion at June 30, 2026. Total assets were $24.15 billion, and shareholders' equity was $4.53 billion.

Asset quality moved the other way. Non-performing assets rose to 1.02% of total assets from 0.93%, and non-performing loans rose to 1.19% of total loans from 1.08%. The company had $326.2 million in the allowance for credit losses, or 1.93% of total loans. Book value per common share rose to $22.74, and tangible book value per common share rose to $15.35.

The company repurchased 1.3 million shares and paid a $0.23 dividend per share, up from $0.21 in the second quarter. Capital return stayed active, but that alone does not show the earnings run rate changed.

What's next

Management will review the results at 1:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, October 15, 2026. A call that shows loans, deposits and non-performing assets holding near these levels would support the case. More loan shrinkage or a further rise in non-performing assets would weaken it. The conference call is the next dated readout on whether the record net income can hold.
