American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) Revenue Rises as Margin Falls

What happened

American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC) increased first-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue 30.0% to $94.1 million from $72.4 million a year earlier.

Orders exceeded $130 million. That equals more than $1.38 of new orders for every dollar of quarterly revenue.

Profit did not keep pace. Gross margin fell to 26.3% from 33.8%, while gross profit rose just 1.0% to $24.7 million. Non-GAAP net income fell 34.3% to $7.6 million from $11.6 million.

Why it matters

The company designs and deploys power-control systems that help stabilize electricity networks. Its filing attributes the margin decline to less favorable product mix and Comtrafo purchase-accounting costs.

Those costs included $0.5 million of acquired-backlog amortization and $0.7 million of inventory step-up. Excluding only those two amounts, an editorial calculation puts gross margin at 27.6%. That is not a company-reported adjusted margin.

The inventory step-up was fully recognized by June 30, but acquired-backlog amortization continues. Management said the company was positioned for gross-margin improvement in the second half of fiscal 2026.

Comtrafo contributed $19.4 million of revenue. Subtracting that amount leaves $74.7 million, or 3.2% growth from the prior-year quarter. This is an editorial subtraction, not company-reported organic growth.

The company reported $301.8 million of remaining performance obligations expected within 12 months. Customer actions can change delivery and revenue-recognition timing.

A large order book supports the demand case, but orders are not profit. Delayed deliveries can postpone revenue, while product mix and acquisition accounting can limit earnings when orders are fulfilled.

What's next

Management guided for second-quarter revenue above $85 million, GAAP net income above $1 million and non-GAAP net income above $8 million.

The next test is whether timely deliveries coincide with recovering gross margin and higher adjusted profit. Meeting the revenue guide without margin improvement would leave the order-to-profit question unresolved.

The quarter strengthens the evidence for specialized power-infrastructure demand. It does not yet prove that scale, product mix and the Comtrafo acquisition will produce durable profit growth.
