Meta Platforms Unveils Muse AI Agent, Expands Smart Glasses and VR Push

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) used its Connect event to outline an expanded artificial intelligence strategy centered on Muse, a personal agent the company said is designed to help users complete tasks, manage information and interact across devices.

The event’s keynote speaker described personal superintelligence as a technology that could give users “an extremely capable personal agent” that understands their goals and can work on their behalf. Meta said its approach is to distribute the technology broadly, rather than concentrate it among a small number of organizations.

Muse, which Meta said it shipped several weeks ago, is intended to evolve into a personal agent used by billions of people. The company said each Muse has its own private and secure virtual machine, or Muse secure VM, and that the Muse Spark model is trained specifically for personal-agent tasks.

Muse expands across shopping, productivity and devices

Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, said the company has rolled out Muse in Canada and plans to bring it to additional countries. Meta recently launched a Muse Mac app that can work across users’ files, messages, calendars and notes, according to Wang.

Meta also announced Computer Vision capabilities for Muse on Mac. With a user’s permission, Wang said, the agent will be able to operate apps on the computer and continue working on queued tasks while the user is away. The company is also developing an email capability that would allow users to add Muse to an email thread or forward emails for it to handle.

The company highlighted an expanding network of connectors that link Muse to external services. Existing and newly announced partners discussed at the event included Spotify, OpenTable, Plaid, Ticketmaster, Stripe, Shopify, PayPal, Expedia, Instacart, Box, GitHub, Granola and Notion.

Wang said Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Sephora and Wayfair are integrating with Muse for shopping experiences. He added that Meta opened its Connector Platform to developers the prior week and had received more than 1,500 applications.

Meta said Muse will be free for a large number of tokens, with the company expecting over time to profit by taking a small fee from transactions. Wang said Meta’s models are optimized for agentic behavior, including remembering preferences, personalizing actions, selecting tools and chaining actions across applications and services.

AI features headed to Meta glasses

The keynote speaker said Meta plans in the coming weeks to upgrade the AI experience on Meta Glasses, enabling users to hold ongoing voice conversations with their Muse rather than receive only a single response to a request. The agent will retain context from prior discussions and work in the background, the company said.

Meta also emphasized privacy and security features. The company said it plans to introduce a Muse confidential VM that would prevent Meta from seeing user information. It is also building private processing for glasses, which it said will allow certain AI features to run in a secure server environment where neither Meta nor others can access users’ data. Meta said it will begin rolling out the technology for features such as live translation.

In addition, Meta announced Hearing Enhancement, an FDA-cleared over-the-counter hearing aid feature designed to compensate for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Users will be able to take a guided assessment in the companion app and tune amplification to their hearing needs, according to the company.

Broader glasses lineup

Meta introduced a new audio-glasses category without cameras, which it said enables lighter and slimmer designs and all-day battery life. The company also updated its Ray-Ban Meta line with Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, featuring slimmer frames and temples, adjustable temple tips, updated battery performance, additional capture modes, Dolby Atmos spatial audio capture and six microphones.

The company said it is adding Clubmaster, Aviator and Zena models to its lineup, along with expanded style options. Meta said it will offer 51 style combinations, including an Adventurer style starting at $249. It also announced a glasses collaboration with rapper and singer Lisa Manobal of Blackpink.

Meta said its Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, which include full-color displays and the Meta Neural Band, will become available online through meta.com and begin an international rollout. By the end of the year, the company expects to offer more than 100 glasses styles.

Meta VR Glasses set for spring launch

The company also unveiled Meta VR Glasses, a roughly 100-gram device that it said delivers high-resolution immersive displays in a glasses form factor. The product is designed to serve as a private cinema, a multi-monitor computer and a gaming device.

Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, said the device is IMAX Enhanced certified and supports Dolby Atmos spatial audio and Dolby Vision. It will support the Quest library with optional controllers, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and 75 hands-only titles at launch, according to Bosworth.

Meta said Disney+, Peacock, Paramount+, HBO Max, YouTube, Prime Video and Crunchyroll will offer content on the platform. The company also said it plans more than 100 immersive sports events per year, including ESPN programming beginning with college football on Quest this fall.

Meta VR Glasses are scheduled to ship in the spring for $1,299.

Finally, Meta previewed Muse Charm, a keychain-sized device designed to provide quick access to the Muse experience through a fingerprint sensor, voice interaction and a camera. The company said it expects Muse Charm to be ready to ship in December and plans to provide additional details later.
