Keurig Dr Pepper (NASDAQ: KDP) sales jump 70.6%, but JDE Peet’s did most of the work

What happened

Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (NASDAQ: KDP) reported third-quarter net sales of $7.34 billion, up 70.6% from a year earlier, and reaffirmed its 2026 guidance. Constant currency growth was 70.1%.

Most of the jump came from the JDE Peet's acquisition. It closed April 1 and added $2.6 billion of net sales in the quarter. Without it, legacy KDP net sales rose 8.6%.

Adjusted diluted EPS rose 22.2% to $0.66. GAAP diluted EPS rose 20.4% to $0.59. Adjusted operating income climbed 52.5% to $1.7 billion. CEO Tim Cofer said the company stepped up investment behind its brands and capabilities to position its two future companies for success.

Where the growth came from

Legacy growth split into volume mix of 6.5% and net price realization of 2.1%. Volume did most of the work.

U.S. Refreshment Beverages grew net sales 10.9% to $3.0 billion. Volume mix rose 7.2% and net price realization added 3.7%. Adjusted operating income rose 8.3% to $884 million. The segment's adjusted margin was 29.1%, down from 29.8% a year earlier. The filing cites inflationary pressures and higher SG&A, including increased marketing.

U.S. Coffee net sales rose 2.7% to $1.0 billion. Volume mix grew 6.9%, but net price realization was unfavorable by 4.2%. Adjusted operating income rose 11.4% to $353 million. The filing says this was primarily driven by tariff refunds, along with volume mix growth, productivity savings and cost synergies.

KDP International net sales rose 11.0% to $644 million, or 7.6% in constant currency. Adjusted operating income still fell 0.6% to $160 million. The filing blames cost pressures, including the Mexico beverage tax, and increased marketing.

Why it matters

The reported growth rate says little about the existing business. The JDE Peet's segment was wholly incremental year over year. Legacy growth is the cleaner read on whether everyday beverage demand is holding.

Profit per dollar of sales fell. Consolidated adjusted operating margin was 22.7%, down 2.6 percentage points from 25.3% a year earlier, even as adjusted operating income rose. The JDE Peet's segment earned an adjusted margin of 18.1%, below every legacy segment.

Two one-time items affect the quarter. A $99 million benefit from tariff refunds lifted both GAAP and adjusted operating income. GAAP pretax income also includes a $400 million gain on the sale of an equity method investment.

Over nine months the gap between GAAP and adjusted results is wide. GAAP diluted EPS fell 33.1% to $0.85. Adjusted diluted EPS rose 13.1% to $1.65. The filing excludes acquisition, integration and financing costs tied to JDE Peet's from adjusted results.

OptimistFi has argued that KDP is a defensive beverage compounder if its North American hot and cold businesses turn everyday purchases into profitable repeat sales without excessive promotion or balance-sheet support. Beverage volume growth backs the first part. The debt below tests the second. The quarter reads as mixed for the case.

Debt, cash and the balance sheet

Net interest expense was $474 million in the quarter, up from $188 million a year earlier. Short-term borrowings and the current portion of long-term obligations stood at $7.27 billion on Sept. 30, up from $3.1 billion on Dec. 31. Long-term obligations were $21.6 billion, up from $13.04 billion.

In the first nine months, KDP spent $16.63 billion on acquisitions. It issued $6.11 billion of notes, drew $3.63 billion on a delayed draw term loan, raised $4.4 billion from convertible preferred stock and received $3.9 billion from selling a non-controlling interest.

Cash generation was solid. Operating cash flow was $1.04 billion and free cash flow was $1.01 billion in the quarter. Cofer called that healthy. The filing's risk language lists significant debt and a possible credit rating downgrade tied to the JDE Peet's acquisition and the separation.

What's next

KDP kept its 2026 outlook of net sales of $25.9 billion to $26.4 billion and constant currency adjusted diluted EPS growth in a low-double-digit range. That includes $8.3 billion to $8.4 billion of net sales and 7 to 8 percentage points of EPS growth from JDE Peet's.

Legacy business EPS growth is guided at 3% to 5% in constant currency, due to revised expectations for U.S. Coffee. Foreign currency translation is forecast to add about one half of one percentage point to full-year net sales and EPS growth.

The company says it remains focused on the milestones that enable its planned separation. The next quarterly report is the next scheduled test. Legacy sales growth near this quarter's pace and U.S. Coffee profit after the tariff refund would support the case. Slower legacy volume or interest expense staying near this quarter's level would weaken it.
