What happened
Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (NYSE: HII) raised its 2026 shipbuilding revenue guidance to between $10.5 billion and $10.7 billion on Oct. 29. The prior range was $10.2 billion to $10.4 billion, so both ends moved up $300 million.
The company kept its shipbuilding operating margin guidance at 6.0% to 6.5% and its free cash flow outlook at $500 million to $600 million. For a holder, more work is booked, but the profit and cash targets did not move with it.
Third-quarter revenue was $3.5 billion, up 10.8% from a year earlier. The company called it a third-quarter record. Net earnings were $217 million, up from $145 million, and diluted earnings per share were $5.48, up from $3.68.
New contract awards in the quarter totaled $32.4 billion, bringing the year-to-date total to $43.1 billion. CEO Chris Kastner said the awards have secured approximately 90% of expected shipbuilding revenue through 2030.

Where the quarter's profit came from
Operating income rose to $246 million from $161 million a year earlier, and operating margin widened to 7.0% from 5.0%. The gain was uneven across the three segments.
Newport News Shipbuilding led. Revenue rose 18.1% to $1.91 billion and segment margin reached 6.9% from 4.9%. The filing says the profit increase came mainly from contract adjustments and incentives in the Virginia-class submarine program, and from higher submarine and aircraft carrier volumes. Volume was not the only driver.
Ingalls Shipbuilding moved the other way. Segment operating income fell to $59 million from $65 million, and margin slipped to 6.7% from 7.9%. The filing blames weaker performance in surface combatants. Revenue still rose 5.8% to $876 million.
Mission Technologies margin rose to 9.0% from 4.3%, while revenue edged up 0.6% to $792 million. The filing cites a successful milestone, higher Unmanned Systems volumes and higher equity income from nuclear and environmental joint ventures. The company raised that segment's full-year margin outlook to approximately 6% from 5%.

Free cash flow so far this year
Third-quarter free cash flow was $429 million, compared with $16 million a year earlier. Operating cash flow was $520 million against $118 million. The year to date is far weaker.
Over nine months, operating cash flow was $99 million versus $546 million in 2025. Free cash flow was negative $182 million versus positive $284 million. Contract assets absorbed $367 million, and accounts payable and accruals used $327 million after providing $207 million a year earlier.
Contract liabilities fell to $780 million from $1.22 billion at Dec. 31, 2025. Cash and equivalents declined to $387 million from $774 million over the same stretch.
OptimistFi's calculation shows what the guidance requires. To land inside its full-year range, the company must generate $682 million to $782 million of free cash flow in the fourth quarter. The outlook also lists a combined fiscal 2026 and 2027 free cash flow target of $1.2 billion to $1.3 billion.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that HII's scarcity as a naval shipbuilder only pays off if it shows up in cash and margins, not just in larger, harder programs. On that test the filing is mixed. Visibility improved because awards now cover most expected revenue through 2030. But margin and cash guidance did not rise with the revenue guidance.
The positives come with caveats. The raise covers shipbuilding revenue only. Part of the Newport News margin gain came from contract adjustments and incentives. Ingalls margin fell. The year's cash target now rests on a fourth quarter much larger than the third.
What's next
The next quarterly report will show whether the fourth-quarter cash arrives. Free cash flow inside the full-year range, with shipbuilding margin inside its unchanged range, would support OptimistFi's case. A shortfall would weaken it, because it would mean bigger programs are absorbing cash faster than they return it.
