Board at UPS Names New CEO

The board of directors at United Parcel Service has appointed David Abney as its new CEO. Abney is currently the COO at the company and he will also become a board member as well.

Scott Davis, who is 62, has been the CEO and Chairman of the Board at the company since 2008. Davis will retire and assume a position as non-executive Chairman. The two moves will go into effect on September 1 of this year.

Abney, who is 58, will be the 11th CEO in the 107 years the company has been in business. He started his career at UPS in 1974 as a package loader. During his 40 years with UPS, Abney has held a number of operational positions.

As the COO, Abney’s responsibilities included UPS sustainability, logistics and engineering. He also led the company’s substantial investment into alternative fuel fleets.

Abney implemented programs to help expand the total freight volume of the company.

He directed the transportation network for UPS that serves over 200 counties.

Prior to his position as the COO, Abney was the UPS International president leading the company’s expansion of its capabilities in global logistics. In that particular role, he was in charge of a number of global acquisitions expanding local market presence and service capacity.

His experience internationally includes leading the freight and logistics division in Latin America and Canada as well as leading the customs brokerage and global freight forwarding division.

He also served as the SonicAir president, SonicAir is a quick delivery service where packages arrive same day. SonicAir signaled a move by UPS into the service parts logistics segment.

Abney is from Greenwood, Mississippi and earned a bachelor’s degree from Delta State University in business administration.

He is currently on the Delta State Alumni Foundation Board of Directors.

Davis has worked 29 years with UPS. He joined the company when UPS acquired II Murphy a technology company. At the time, he was the CEO at that company.

The native of Oregon became the CFO in 2001 at UPS. In 2006, Davis was named the vice chairman and joined the board of directors. He became Chairman of the Board and CEO in January of 2008.
